What is the acupuncture process?

Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine, sterile, stainless steel needles into specific points on the body that have a high concentration of neuro-vascular tissue. The insertion of acupuncture needles at these specific points sends a message through the nervous system to normalize physiological function, reduce pain, and stimulate the immune system. Acupuncture has a profound impact on organ function, hormonal levels, circulation, sleep patterns, and energy level.

Acupuncture is one of the oldest known forms of healing, and has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease for over 2,000 years. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional, and lifestyle counseling are used throughout treatment to promote health. Acupuncture originated in China and is now used worldwide as an effective means of overcoming disease.

What happens during an acupuncture treatment?

Before each treatment, Jennifer will evaluate your health by asking you questions about how you feel and your health history. She may ask to feel your pulse, not just to check its speed, but to judge its condition. She may also examine your tongue, which by its color and texture can reveal much about your health. She may perform some orthopedic tests to evaluate your muscular-skeletal condition or injury.

After this exam, you will begin your treatment. Only disposable needles are used. The needles are as thin as human hair and are tapped in through a tiny tube. The needles are left in for 25 to 30 minutes while you relax under a heat lamp as soft music plays. Most patients go into a state of deep relaxation and some even fall asleep due to the endorphins that are released during the treatment. Herbal supplements may be recommended to support your treatment.

Does acupuncture hurt?

The needles used for acupuncture are hair-like in diameter and solid, not hollow like a hypodermic, so they do not cut. There is typically a light pricking sensation and then other sensations occur such as heaviness, tingling, warmth, movement, pulling, a slight dull ache, numbness, or a spreading sensation. The sensations stop once the needles are removed. Both during and following treatment it is common for patients to feel very relaxed.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required depends on the severity and duration of the symptoms to be addressed. For a cold or flu, one or two treatments can be very helpful. For chronic health conditions of years or even life-long duration, a longer course of treatment is normally required. While a specific problem is being addressed, you may need treatment once or twice a week, and then gradually reduce the frequency to once or twice a month. To simply maintain good health, you may limit your treatments to once every four to six weeks. Within the first 4-6 sessions, the effectiveness of the treatment is often evident and clear treatment goals should be established.

Do I have to believe in acupuncture for it to work?

Fortunately, no. It works on animals and young children--both of which do not appear to have a belief system about acupuncture.

Are there any precautions to be observed on the day of an acupuncture treatment?

Yes. To enhance the value of the treatment, the following guidelines are recommended:

  1. Do not come on an empty stomach – have a light snack shortly before.
  2. Do not eat an unusually large meal just before or after treatment.
  3. Do not over-exercise or consume alcoholic beverages 6 hours before or after treatment.
  4. Allow for a period of rest immediately after your acupuncture treatment.
  5. Continue to take your prescription medications as prescribed by your primary care physician.

Do you bill health insurance?

Yes, we do bill insurance directly.  If possible, supply our office with your health insurance information 3 days before your initial appointment so we can confirm coverage and check for co-pay or deductibles that need to be met.  Herbal treatment is generally not covered.  If your health insurance does not cover acupuncture, you may want to contact your insurance provider to encourage them to provide reimbursement for acupuncture.

Flex-spending and health-savings accounts may also reimburse acupuncture costs. Acupuncture is often covered under Workers' Compensation. We will accept Workers' Compensation insurance, if written pre-authorization is obtained from your insurance company. This is the patient's responsibility.

What is your cancellation policy?

We request 24-hour notice for cancellation of appointments.
